Senior Solicitor, Enforcement and Compliance - Maritime New Zealand - Wellington

Maritime NZ is the national regulatory, compliance and response agency responsible for the safety, security and environmental protection of New Zealand’s seas, rivers, and lakes.


What we do touches the lives of many New Zealanders, as well as international visitors and sea-borne traffic, daily. This is true whether you are a recreational boatie, a commercial operator, a port authority, a seafarer, or a regional council responding to an oil spill. Our maritime environment is vital to New Zealand’s prosperity, security and social wellbeing - providing valuable employment, trade, tourism and recreational opportunities. Our mission is to lead and support the maritime community to take responsibility for ensuring our seas, rivers and lakes are safe, secure and clean, on behalf of all New Zealanders.


Our legal team manages a diverse range of commercial, enforcement, and public law (including international) matters, providing a broad range of legal services to assist Maritime NZ in achieving safe, secure and clean seas including: public law advice on the exercise of statutory functions and powers, international law advice, legal drafting of maritime and marine protection rules, legal opinion work, contract, procurement and property law advice, and conducting and managing litigation.


We are currently looking for a permanent full-time Senior Solicitor to join our enforcement and compliance practice, working closely with both the in-house legal team and Crown Solicitors to manage litigation and provide advice and support to the compliance teams.


The role would ideally be based in either Wellington, Nelson or Christchurch, but we would consider applicants based in other locations where Maritime NZ has an office, please let us know your preference. 


To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • A Bachelor of Laws or higher
  • Admission as Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand and a current practising certificate (or eligibility to hold one)
  • A minimum of 5 years plus post-admission experience
  • Experience in litigation or litigation management, particularly in the public law and/or prosecution context
  • Experience in maritime law, transport law and health and safety law would be an advantage
