About the role
The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) Legal Services team is seeking an experienced intermediate solicitor ready to take the next step up to a senior solicitor role.
This is an opportunity to advance your career in a busy, collegial legal team with a varied and dynamic workload; from regulatory enforcement actions, public law, statutory and rules interpretation, corporate, governance and general government administration law including responsibility for the CAA’s official information and privacy functions.
The successful candidate will support our busy litigation practice, including instructing external counsel and preparing court proceeding in administrative appeals, civil litigation, coronial inquests, and regulatory prosecutions. The role includes the provision of advice to the Director of Civil Aviation and General Manager of the Aviation Security Service on safety and security matters. This is a newly created position, enabling the successful candidate to develop in areas of interest.
You will report to the Chief Legal Counsel and work closely with our Principal and Senior solicitor. The role will encompass mentoring and assisting the development of our solicitors and graduate solicitor.
What we’re looking for
The job holder will need to exercise the following characteristics to successfully fulfil the potentially demanding requirements of this position:
- The ability to communicate in plain English complex legal issues to non-lawyers.
- Pro-active in recognising legal risks and problems with the ability to identify appropriate solutions.
- The ability to maintain an independent, professional perspective even under pressure.
- Qualified solicitor with current membership or eligibility for membership in the New Zealand Law Society. (Practicing certificate).
- Fours years or more post-admission experience in providing high level legal advice in the field of public law/or government administration and legal research and writing.
- Experience in providing legal advice to senior management on statutory and regulatory compliance and decision making with particular skill in providing tactical advice and guidance in identifying and managing legal risk
