ILANZ, In-House Lawyers Association of New Zealand

Senior Legal Counsel, RMA/Regulatory Litigation - Niche - Queenstown

We have an outstanding opportunity for a senior litigation lawyer who really wants to make a difference for the communities they serve, while also furthering their career in public law/RMA litigation.

The Senior Legal Counsel RMA/Regulatory is an exciting role that will have the primary responsibility of representing the Council in RMA litigation and other forms of litigation (such as judicial review).  You will have autonomy to lead mediations and court hearings (both in the Environment Court and appellate courts) while at the same time having the support of experienced RMA and litigation lawyers both within the Council and externally from some of New Zealand’s most recognised RMA and litigation firms.

The role presents a unique opportunity for a talented and ambitious lawyer seeking extensive and high quality litigation experience. It is fascinating work that will stimulate an intelligent legal mind, ideal for someone who wants to continuously learn and progress their skills. The successful candidate will also need a good balance of academic and emotional intelligence.

  • 5+ years’ experience in litigation or RMA practice required
  • Excellent oral presentation skills
  • Strong written communication skills
  • Confident, with the ability to build, maintain and leverage relationships at all levels
  • Experience working in the RMA space desirable but not essential for the right candidate
  • NZ Practicing certificate required.

The Queenstown Lakes District Council has a central role to play in maintaining and enhancing the quality and liveability of the outstanding environment of the district, and aspires to create momentum in a range of areas through a focus on three peaks - enduring landscapes, bold leadership and strong and diverse communities.

You will be joining a supportive and highly collaborative organisation that has a strong focus on training and development.  There is a real focus on living the QLDC vision, mission and values, and that resonates throughout the organisation.

The legal team has a strong culture, that integrates having fun with a highly functional, outcomes focused mandate.

This all combines with the ability to live in the Queenstown Lakes District, and is supported by a competitive salary and some great benefits.

We are very open to candidates from outside the area, and assistance with relocation may be available.
