About the opportunity
Reporting to the General Counsel and working integrally with construction partners throughout Calder Stewart, the Legal Counsel will provide legal input into contractual negotiations, implementation and management to ensure the efficient and effective running of all contractual obligations, including assisting the General Counsel in positively managing and resolving commercial disputes.
More broadly, you will take responsibility for providing support and advice on commercial contracts, risk management – including insurance - and matters of statutory compliance. Using your strong communication capability, you will take a key role in supporting the construction partners, project managers and other key members of the team to deepen their understanding of relevant legal, contractual and legislative matters.
This is a key role that combines technical, legal capability with the willingness to support, guide and advise internal clients using the strength of the relationships that you build. Sound like you?
About you
To be successful as the Legal Counsel, you will hold a New Zealand legal practicing certificate with approximately 4 to 6 years PQE together with a sound and broad understanding of commercial and contract law. Exposure to construction law and relevant New Zealand standards related to construction contract documents would be advantageous but if you are a bright, self-starter, you will pick this up.
Although your technical legal capability and potential are important, the key to ensuring your success as the Legal Counsel will be your ability to build strong working relationships with your internal clients – the construction managers, project managers and other key people throughout the business. This is a business that builds success through people and alignment culturally with this approach is vital.
