Legal Counsel - Palmerston North City Council - Palmerston North

  • Small city benefits, big city ambition
  • Exciting generalist role with focus on administrative law
  • Work in a dynamic local government setting

Palmerston North is a vibrant, progressive and ambitious city. The city is currently experiencing growth in all sectors and competes with other regional centres amidst technological and demographic change for capital, talent and visitors.

In this context Palmerston North City Council (PNCC) provides services to 88,000 residents, employing 600 staff across a broad range of functions. PNCC is leading a bold new vision for Palmerston North: small city benefits, big city ambition that will help the metro achieve its potential, capitalise on its strengths, and thrive in the future.

Currently PNCC is seeking to appoint a Legal Counsel to join its Strategy & Planning unit. This role provides general legal counsel across all aspects of Council affairs. This service includes document preparation, and the provision of advice on constitutional matters of Council.

Preferred candidates for this role will ideally have a background in public/administrative law, a strong service ethic, and a commitment to providing seamless service to staff and elected members. The ability to work as part of a cohesive team, and build strong working networks across PNCC, is also important for success. This role is instrumental in ensuring a high quality of advice to Council and its committees, that in turn facilitates effective decision-making.

If you are looking for a role where you can work for a great council and contribute to a high performing team that has real value for the city, this role represents a compelling next career step.
