The New Zealand Law Society | Te Kāhui Ture o Aotearoa is the professional body for barristers and solicitors in New Zealand. The Law Society regulates all lawyers practising in New Zealand and is the membership organisation for practising lawyers. With 13 branch offices throughout the country, the Law Society is the Kaitiaki (guardian) of the practise of law in Aotearoa New Zealand and the consumers of legal services.

Our Legal and Registry team play an active role in facilitating the New Zealand Law Society's legislative programme through the delivery of efficient in-house legal services and are responsible for the registry of lawyers in accordance with the Law Society's statutory regulatory functions.


You will be responsible for leading our expert in-house team of Senior Solicitor and Regulatory Solicitors who provide legal advice for, and legal assistance to, the Law Society on a wide range of issues.  This includes ensuring that the Solicitors are providing clear and timely legal advice in line with the strategic direction of the team and regulatory functions.


You will encourage and develop a high performing and engaged registry team that works collaboratively with all areas of the Law Society. This role will have oversight on the delivery of all applications under the Lawyers and Conveyancers Act 2006, including practising certificates, certificates of character, practise on own account, certificates of standing and all other related matters and committees, including the Practise Approval Committee.


You will also oversee and manage the Law Society's Continuing Professional Development (CPD) scheme by supporting the CPD Manger to promote and champion the CPD scheme.


The role is highly collaborative, and you will need the confidence to develop and manage relationships at all levels across the Law Society, as well as those outside the organisation.

Our ideal candidate will bring:

  • A Bachelor of Laws (or equivalent) and admission in New Zealand as a barrister and/or solicitor and eligibility to hold a current practicing certificate issued by the New Zealand Law Society.
  • Significant experience providing legal advice to clients.
  • Previous experience in managing and building teams in a dynamic and changing environment.
  • A track record in collaboration and building strong client and stakeholder relationships.
  • Ability to deal confidently with people from a wide range of backgrounds in relation to sensitive issues.
