The New Zealand Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) is seeking a passionate and professional General Counsel to lead its Legal and Compliance & Risk teams.
This is a significant leadership and advisory role and is the principal legal advisor to the Director-General responsible for the provision of both strategic and operational legal advice and the management of litigation on behalf of the NZSIS.
The General Counsel is a member of the senior leadership team and actively contributes to the effective leadership and governance of the NZSIS.
In this role you will be responsible for the management of key external relationships in relation to legal matters with Ministers, Crown Law, oversight bodies, overseas agencies and the private sector and ensuring that the reputation of NZSIS Legal and Compliance is viewed positively.
To be successful in this role you will possess strong leadership skills and proven ability to build and maintain a range of high-functioning working relationships.
We are seeking an individual with strong public law experience and working knowledge of public law (including judicial review, state sector, public finance and the application of the Treaty of Waitangi/Te Tiriti of Waitangi to the public service). Familiar with the function of a chief legal counsel at a senior level, you will be self-motivating, innovative and capable of exercising excellent judgement.

To be eligible for employment within the NZIC you must have been a NZ citizen for at least 10 years. Alternatively you must hold NZ Permanent Residence or hold a current NZ Residency Class Visa and have been a citizen of UK, USA, Canada or Australia for at least 10 years.
You must be able to obtain and maintain a high level security clearance. Ordinarily to obtain this level of clearance candidates must have a 15 year checkable background in countries where meaningful and reliable checks can be undertaken. Where requisite checks are unable to be made, the candidate application may not be able to be progressed.
