The opportunity

We are looking for a General Counsel to lead our high performing Legal team that supports the EPA in delivering on its responsibilities, strategic direction and to provide sound legal advice. You will be part of the executive leadership team and be required to identify and manage legal risks to the EPA, provide legal representation and shape a high performing legal function within the EPA.

This role leads a group of approximately 10-12 Principal Solicitors, Senior Solicitors and Solicitors. If you are a dynamic thinker and thrive working with passionate people, then this is the position for you!

About you

We are looking for someone who has a range of qualities, including: 

  • Senior leadership experience; a track record of diverse management roles incorporating a broad range of organisational support functions
  • Seasoned professional experience in the public sector, private practice or as in-house advisor
  • Recognised Law degree and current practicing certificate
  • Experience leading and managing complex litigation, preferably, but not essential, in the Environment Court Well established knowledge with legal methodologies and techniques
  • Sound understanding of public policy processes and the roles of government agencies
  • Sound understanding of risk identification and management
  • Demonstrable ability to perform effectively in a strategic sense, particularly in terms of an ability to identify systemic issues that contribute to legal failure or difficulty and the ability to find systemic solutions to them
  • In-depth knowledge of core/local Government and the natural resources sector
