President's Column - June 2021
Kia ora koutou
Welcome to the June edition of the Insider. In this edition we congratulate the winners of the ILANZ Awards 2021 and celebrate what a huge success the ILANZ conference was. We received some excellent feedback from the almost 400 delegates who attended, including some fantastic suggestions for improving things next time around. We hope you enjoyed the event and had a good chance to connect, learn and celebrate with your peers after what has been a very challenging time. We hope to see you all next year in Christchurch for ILANZ Conference 2022 on 5 & 6 May.
ILANZ AGM
We held our AGM on Friday 21st May where myself and Ben Jacobs, ILANZ Treasurer updated members on our progress and activities since June 2020.
Thanks to you
I would like to thank all of the speakers, sponsors and delegates who attended and supported ILANZ Conference this year. I am also very grateful for the ILANZ Committee and to Anita Rhodes and the NZLS support staff who worked hard to ensure the event was a success. We look forward to further growing and improving the event for next year and beyond.
Pro bono update
Last week, representatives of the NZLS appeared before the Justice select committee on the Lawyers and Conveyancers (Employed Lawyers Providing Free Legal Services) Amendment Bill, which seeks to allow employed lawyers to provide free legal services. We will be keeping you up to date with the progress as we hear it.
It’s hard to say goodbye
Last month, we said goodbye to Sir Ian Barker, who has been ILANZ Patron for over 30 years. Sir Ian has made a significant contribution to the in-house legal community. We are grateful for his dedication and passion for the in-house legal community. It was a privilege to have him judge the ILANZ Awards 2021 as his last official duty as ILANZ Patron. We also farewelled Tiffany Henderson, who contributed a great amount of support to ILANZ and the committee over her 5 years, as ILANZ Manager. Thank you Tiffany.
Looking to the future
The ILANZ Committee will shortly meet to review our strategic direction, reflecting on the past year and refining our approach to ensure that ILANZ is able to continue connecting, supporting and leading the in-house profession. We’ll working to strength and refine the existing benefits for ILANZ members and find new ways to create value for members. In light of recent changes and challenges, we’ll also be exploring how we might ensure that ILANZ is able to continue thriving and growing so that it can be here for the long term.
