Senior Legal Manager

The city of Auckland and the Port of Auckland have grown together on the Waitematā and Manukau Harbours for more than 175 years. Port of Auckland is part of the special character of our city and plays a vital role in our economy, delivering the things we need and enjoy. 

Nearly three-quarters of the port's inbound cargo stays within the Auckland and Upper Waikato region.  Our location on Auckland's doorstep means the delivery of goods is quick, the cost of goods is low, and we are focusing on reducing our carbon footprint to become a sustainable Port. We also have a network of freight hubs throughout the North Island, to improve access to the port for the provinces. 

We are currently seeking a Senior Legal Manager for this newly created role.

ABOUT THE ROLE | Te tūranga mahi 

The focus of this role is to assist POAL in building to grow it success across customer, commercial and culture goals as a generalist corporate / commercial in-house lawyer. You will contribute significantly to the design and implementation of an in-house legal function supporting training, self-help, and promoting a culture of seeking relationship-based, collaborative, and commercial solutions, and using the law as a problem-solving tool.

As a member of the Legal Team, and reporting through to the General Counsel, your key responsibilities are to contribute towards ensuring: 

  • Legal and reputational risks are consistently identified and appropriately managed, including instructing external legal advisors.
  • POAL’s legal services are meeting legal and business requirements and are reviewed annually, including against budget.
  • POAL’s “one-way, same way, best way, safest way” strategy is embedding compliance with the highest levels of legal “good faith” requirements.
  • Senior leaders are competent in facilitating interest-based problem solving and use these skills to engage unions, the workforce, customers and Auckland community negotiations.
  • Improving legal transactional capability ensuring legal oversight and due diligence in relation to corporate transactions (e.g., M&A, partnerships, capital and infrastructure projects), including managing external legal advisors.
  • Providing ESG advice in relation to legislation changes.

ABOUT YOU | Ko wai koe

  • At least 8 years PQE, with some experience in-house preferred.
  • Experience required in Commercial and contract law (with broad understanding of competition law), IT/digital/privacy (need to be IT savvy), and legal operations management.
  • It would be helpful if you also have experience in the port or transport industry, property law, dispute resolution (or management of), and ESG.

  • Ability to work under pressure and manage conflicting work priorities to achieve optimal business results.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate across different audiences with clarity and confidence.

This is a part-time, 24 hours a week role with flexible working.
