Senior Legal Counsel (12-month fixed term)

An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced Senior Legal Counsel to join the bank’s highly regarded Legal Team on a 12 month fixed term contract covering parental leave.

Reporting to the bank’s Head of Legal, the Senior Legal Counsel will support all areas of the bank, however a large component of the role will be providing transactional and non-transactional legal support to our largest division; Country Banking.

You will also play a pivotal role in supporting work across regulatory change, providing legal advice on products, policies and procedures, marketing and sponsorship, external communications and media releases, and non-transactional contracts.

We are seeking a candidate who can demonstrate: 

  • 7+ years of post-qualification experience.
  • Experience gained from either; a law firm; a financial institution; or a regulatory agency with a focus on legal compliance and financial sector law reform. 
  • Currently hold, or be eligible to hold, a practising certificate as a barrister and solicitor.
  • Sound knowledge of New Zealand laws governing secured lending and experience in advising on secured lending transactions is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of New Zealand financial services legislation.
