Senior Legal Advisor in the Governance and Legal team - Waikato-Tainui - Hamilton

Waikato-Tainui is the post-settlement governance entity for the Waikato iwi. We are committed to building the capacity of our iwi, hapuu, marae, and tribal members. We manage tribal affairs, implement the tribe's development strategy, and make distributions for education, health and wellbeing, marae, and social and cultural development. 
  
Our Governance & Legal team is looking for a skilled and pragmatic lawyer who can adapt to change quickly.  This is an exciting opportunity for someone with 8 years PQE+  to join our close-knit and highly skilled team, with opportunities for future advancement. You will report directly to the General Manager, Governance and Legal and be responsible for supervising and mentoring two junior solicitors in our team.
  

Te Arotahi Matua - Focus of Role:

You will advise on the wide range of interesting and unique legal issues confronting Waikato-Tainui. This position plays an important role in co-ordinating and leading legal work to ensure that decision making takes account of all relevant viewpoints and to ensure that legal advice is coherent, coordinated, and as complete as possible. The role works collaboratively across the organisation to support the highest standard of executive decision making by providing quality legal advice that is timely, forward looking, and cognisant of changing circumstances and emerging legal issues.


Ngaa Tohu Maatauranga – Skills & Qualifications: 
  • Sound technical skills and judgement in commercial and/or property law
  • Strong analytical, writing, and communication skills
  • Experience supervising and mentoring junior legal staff
  • A commitment to te ao Maaori and Waikato-Tainui tikanga. Proficiency or developing proficiency in te reo Maaori is a highly desirable attribute
  • Experience working in or advising the not-for-profit sector is advantageous

Qualifications:
  • Law degree and current NZLS practising certificate
  • At least 8 years PQE
