  • Salary Band 5: $109,901 - $148,629

About the role: 

The Human Rights Commission have a Permanent Senior Legal Adviser position and a 12-month Fixed Term Senior Legal Adviser position available with the Legal Research and Monitoring Team.  

This is an exciting opportunity to provide expert legal advice across a wide range of human rights related issues. You will provide support and assistance to the Commission's Chief Legal Adviser and work closely with other members of the legal team, the Chief Executive, and the human Rights Commissioners. In this role, you will enjoy being part of a supportive and flexible work environment, one that offers interesting and rewarding work.

About the team: 

The Commission's Legal, Research and Monitoring team is responsible for providing expert advice on legal and policy matters, participating in legal proceedings, undertaking research for the Commission, preparing submissions for Select Committees, liaising with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders and monitoring New Zealand's compliance with international human rights obligations.

A successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the following: 

  • A relevant University legal qualification – minimum LLB 
  • Current legal practising certificate or the ability to obtain one 
  • A minimum of 7 years of relevant post-qualification experience 
  • Knowledge of the Human Rights Act 1993 and broader human rights law – specific expertise is desirable in at least one of the Commission's priority areas including race relations, indigenous rights, human rights dimensions of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, Equal Employment Opportunities, and the rights of disabled people, sexual minorities, women, children, and prisoners 
  • Knowledge of the international human rights framework and international treaty bodies 
  • Proven expertise in research, analysis, monitoring and evaluation methodologies 
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare clear and persuasive written material, and to produce substantive reports 
  • Experience in managing internal and external relationships with a variety of audiences and demonstrated success in building relationships and gaining the support and participation of stakeholders 
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills.
