The Wellington City Council (WCC) legal team are making some changes – for the better!

As well as a Principal Legal Counsel (Regulatory), Wellington City Council are looking for 5 Legal and Senior Legal Counsels to work across the Public Law, Property, Construction, Commercial and RMA specialities.

 

About you

As the Principal Legal Counsel (Regulatory), you will:

  • have at least 7 years PQE, ideally including some in-house legal experience
  • be passionate about leadership and building a supportive team environment
  • understand the regulatory frameworks in which Council operates
  • be able to provide strategic, solutions focused legal advice
  • thrive in uncertain and complex environments

 

As a Senior Legal Counsel, you will:

  • have at least 5 years PQE, ideally including some in-house, public sector legal experience
  • have advanced statutory interpretations skills
  • demonstrated ability to provide legal advice in a practical and understandable manner
  • understand the regulatory frameworks in which Council operate
  • be able to provide strategic, solutions focused legal advice
  • thrive in uncertain and complex environments

 

As a Legal Counsel, you will:

  • have 1-3 PQE, ideally including some commercial property experience
  • be interested in gaining experience working with legislation relevant to local government
  • have experience in drafting and/or interpreting documents
  • thrive in uncertain and complex environments

 

The work

The legal team at WCC do amazing, challenging and varied work for our city. The team provide regulatory legal advice, support safe decision making (Public Law), provide advice on development agreements and leasing (Property Law), and the construction of Te Matapihi library, Town Hall redevelopment, social housing upgrades (Construction Law). They also support the wider business with commercial projects such as FIFA World Cup, Let’s Get Wellington Moving (Commercial Law) and the District Plan review (RMA).
