Senior Legal Counsel - Powerco- Wellington NZ

Tauranga, Wellington or New Plymouth

Permanent - Full or part-time - Flexible, hybrid

About the role

A rare opportunity for a senior in-house role in the energy industry.

As Aotearoa's second largest electricity and gas distributor, Powerco keeps the lights on and gas flowing to more than a million customers across Te Ika-a-Maui.

Our small, high performing legal team strives to deliver outstanding legal services to meet Powerco's business objectives and manage legal risk. We are looking for a senior lawyer and natural influencer who shares our passion for innovation, efficiency and excellence in the delivery of in-house legal services.

Reporting to the Head of Legal, you'll be a key adviser to the business, providing timely, solution-focused legal input to support effective and strategic decision-making.

You'll work closely with internal stakeholders across all business groups providing legal input on a range of areas, particularly contracts, commercial law, procurement and energy and infrastructure projects.

It's an exciting time to work in the energy industry. Powerco has a diverse pipeline of projects as Aotearoa moves to a low-emissions future.

Skills and experience include the following:

· Law degree

· Current practicing certificate (or ability to get one)

· 6-10+ years' post qualification experience

· Ability to focus on the big picture and embrace clarity and simplicity over complexity

· Impeccable ethics

· Sound commercial judgement and pragmatism

Benefits include the following:

· Loads of flexibility. We embrace hybrid working so if you'd like to work a few days a week from home (or the beach) - that's fine by us

· All the usual stuff, but way better - 4% KiwiSaver, ability to buy extra leave, paid volunteer days, great parental leave entitlements, free life and medical insurance - I know, right?!

· Excellent opportunities for professional growth, including an annual programme for technical and personal development

· Working with an amazing, supportive, and fun team - even if we do say so ourselves

Applications close on Friday, 8 July 2022.

Our ability to get the best out of people is what sets Powerco apart. We realise that candidates - especially from underrepresented and neurodiverse backgrounds - often won't apply for roles unless they meet ALL the criteria. We encourage anyone who shares our passion for connecting communities to apply for any role that aligns to your strengths and interests. We will provide a safe space where you can bring your whole self to work and thrive.
