Legal Counsel - Commerce Commission New Zealand - Wellington or Auckland

The Commerce Commission is New Zealand's competition, fair trading, consumer credit, and economic regulatory agency. Our mission is to make New Zealanders better off by ensuring our markets work well and consumers and businesses are confident participants in those markets.

As our areas of regulation grow, we have been transforming as an organisation and adopting a more collaborative, cross-functional approach to the delivery of legal services. A recent organisational review has brought our lawyers and paralegals into one branch, creating one of the largest in-house legal teams in the country.

The opportunity

As a Legal Counsel at the Commission, you will be part of an expert Legal Services team with an impressive record of enforcement outcomes and defended appeals.

As a lawyer assigned to strategically significant Commission projects, you will be carrying out complex legal research and analysis of relevant NZ and international competition, regulatory and fair trading law; and analysing complex information to identify solutions to legal issues, with support from senior colleagues.

You will be the project manager on selected litigation projects, advising on litigation strategy, providing instruction to external legal counsel, drafting and reviewing Court documents and ensuring the Commission behaves as a model litigant.

This is a permanent role that may be based in Wellington or Auckland.

Key requirements

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Undergraduate degree in law with a sound academic transcript
  • Current New Zealand practising certificate
  • 2-8 years’ Post Qualification Experience
  • Substantial experience in competition or consumer law, public law and/or litigation
  • Demonstrated drafting ability in Court pleadings and legal advice
  • Sound legal research and analytical ability
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Above all, we are seeking smart and curious lawyers who have a keen interest in working on important fair trading, competition and regulatory issues and who are committed to public service and making life better for New Zealanders.

At the Commission we are passionate about the work we do to make New Zealanders better off. We have a great working environment and culture where everyone is valued. Having excellent people is critical to our success. We promise interesting and challenging work and we prioritise learning and development opportunities so that everyone can reach their full potential. We are open to flexible working arrangements.
