Legal Advisor - The Commerce Commission New Zealand - Wellington or Auckland

The Commerce Commission is New Zealand's competition, fair trading, consumer credit, and economic regulatory agency. Our mission is to make New Zealanders better off by ensuring our markets work well and consumers and businesses are confident participants in those markets.

As our areas of regulation grow, we have been transforming as an organisation and adopting a more collaborative, cross-functional approach to the delivery of legal services. A recent organisational review has brought our lawyers and paralegals into one branch, creating one of the largest in-house legal teams in the country.

The opportunity

As a Legal Advisor at the Commission, you will be part of an expert Legal Services team with an impressive record of enforcement outcomes and defended appeals.

Under the guidance and mentoring of senior colleagues, you will have the opportunity to work on strategically significant and complex Commission projects. You will be carrying out research and analysis of relevant NZ and international competition, regulatory and fair trading law; and assisting with the drafting and presentation of legal opinions and advice.

This is a permanent role that may be based in Wellington or Auckland.

Key requirements

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Undergraduate degree in law with a sound academic transcript
  • Current New Zealand practising certificate
  • 1 to 2 years’ Post Qualification Experience
  • Experience in competition or consumer law, public law and/or litigation
  • Strong problem solving, research and analytical skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Above all, we are seeking smart and curious lawyers who have a keen interest in working on important fair trading, competition and regulatory issues and who are committed to public service and making life better for New Zealanders.

At the Commission we are passionate about the work we do to make New Zealanders better off. We have a great working environment and culture where everyone is valued. Having excellent people is critical to our success. We promise interesting and challenging work and we prioritise learning and development opportunities so that everyone can reach their full potential. We are open to flexible working arrangements.
