Legal Adviser - Intermediate or Senior level (part time 20 hours per week)

  • Use your skills and special interest in commercial or corporate law to advise across a wide variety of issues affecting local government
  • Work flexibly in a small, professional in-house team
  • Nelson is a thriving “Smart Little City” with lots of lifestyle opportunities

About the role

We have a great opportunity for an intermediate or senior lawyer to join our busy in-house legal team and support Council as it develops its approach to key issues important in our region.

Based in Nelson and reporting to our General Counsel, you will provide high quality legal support and advice primarily in commercial, contracting and procurement matters, while also supporting all aspects of Nelson City Council’s activities and business.

This role has potential for tremendous variety. While you’ll be focused in the commercial, contracting and procurement space, you’ll have the opportunity to provide advice across a broad range of areas affecting local government, such as commercial and strategic property negotiations, development agreements, civil disputes, LGOIMA and Privacy, CCTO/CCO matters and law reform.

About you

As a qualified and experienced commercial lawyer, you will be a pragmatic problem solver, bring strong communication skills and create great relationships across the organisation and with external legal providers to ensure the best outcomes for Council. Expeience in property law would be a bonus.

Your experience in local or central government is ideal but not essential, and you must be eligible to hold a practising certificate.

What we offer

In return for bringing your skills, knowledge and experience to us, you’ll be rewarded with a comprehensive remuneration package (salary, KiwiSaver, relocation assistance, and more), generous leave provisions and ongoing personal and professional development in an inclusive and supportive work environment.

This is a part-time position, 20 hours per week offering flexibility with start and finish times. Talk to us about the kind of arrangement you’re looking for!
