St John is at the frontline of medical response, providing Ambulance Services throughout New Zealand. We're also part of a much broader picture of health care, through our provision of first aid training, event medical services, AEDs (defibrillators), first aid kits and supplies, medical alarms, youth groups and a wide range of community programmes. 

 

We have a vacancy we are looking to fill in the new year. We are seeking a General Manager Legal and Risk who reports directly to our Deputy Chief Executive, Corporate Operations and can have a base of Auckland or Christchurch.  The General Manager Legal & Risk is a member of the St John Senior Leadership Team (SLT). As a member of the SLT you will support the Deputy Chief Executive by working collaboratively with other members to support the delivery of the strategic priorities set by the Priory Board (PB) and cascaded into functional objectives.

The General Manager Legal & Risk incorporates the role of General Counsel with responsibility for the provision of senior independent legal advice to the organisation.

As the lead for Legal & Risk you are responsible for:

  • Legal and contract management
  • Governance arrangements
  • Procurement
  • Risk & Assurance
  • Privacy

To work effectively in this role across these areas within St John we are looking for:

  • Law Degree with a current practicing certificate
  • Minimum 10 years postgraduate qualification experience or similar relevant qualification or evidence of continuous professional development
  • A track record of working within a complex, multi-stakeholder environment
  • Direct experience of working with boards of Charities, public sector or commercial organisations
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of applicable laws, corporate governance procedures and processes
  • Knowledge and understanding of risk management systems and processes
  • Knowledge and experience in business planning, budgeting, and developing business cases
  • Ability to guide and motivate staff to high levels of performance
  • Self-aware & relates well to others - highly developed interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated business and commercial awareness
  • Strong customer service focus: good understanding of internal and external customer needs/expectations/making improvements to meet them
  • Proven experience at a senior level, with the demonstrated ability to think logically and laterally and in a constructive and independent manner and to participate effectively in strategic decision-making
  • Knowledge and appreciation of the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi - an appreciation of New Zealand's diversity and a commitment to supporting the development of multicultural communities across New Zealand
  • Ability to communicate effectively on complex issues- verbally and in writing
