Farmlands is seeking applications for a General Counsel to join our Legal & Risk team.

Reporting to the CFO, the role is responsible for providing expert strategic legal counsel and guidance to Farmlands' Executive Team and board and has full responsibility for the provision of all in-house legal services. This includes delivering corporate strategies and tactical initiatives whilst ensuring compliance with NZ laws and regulations.

With a strong commercial focus, you'll work closely with senior stakeholders to anticipate and mitigate legal risks and issues, and develop relationships of confidence, trust and respect. This is a senior leadership position where you will lead a team, shape legal strategy and influence critical decision-making processes.

The role also involves society secretary responsibilities to provide advice and services to our Board of Directors.

Mōhou ake | About you

You'll have significant experience in a corporate in-house / co-operative environment including:

  • 10+ years' minimum PQE experience in commercial legal roles
  • Experience in mergers and acquisitions, litigation, risk management
  • Team leadership and senior management experience
  • Company secretary experience
  • Internal audit experience (desirable)

Aside from your experience, you'll bring:

  • Exceptional communication, influencing and interpersonal skills (to Board level)
  • Robust, strategic and timely decision-making and advice
  • Discernment to achieve the right balance between business progress and risk mitigation
  • A creative and innovative mindset and a drive to succeed 
  • The ability to embrace and drive change in a transforming business 
  • Connection to the NZ rural sector preferred but not essential
