Privacy Overhaul - Are you ready for the new Privacy Act 2020?
You may have heard that the new Privacy Act 2020 will be coming into force on 1 December, bringing New Zealand into the modern era of privacy.
What does this mean for your business? You’ll have some new obligations, particularly if things go wrong. Most importantly:
- If you experience a privacy breach which could cause serious harm, you’ll need to notify the Privacy Commissioner and may need to notify the affected individuals.
- If you’re transferring personal information overseas you may need to take further steps to ensure the transfer meets the requirements of New Zealand privacy law.
And if things do go wrong, the fines that you could face if you don’t comply with the Privacy Act have increased. As more and more people become aware of the new regulatory environment, and the level of trust that they put in businesses to protect their personal information increases, it’s more important than ever for you to protect your reputation when it comes to privacy.
Now is the time to check that your staff and colleagues understand their obligations, and that your business has the systems and processes in place that it needs to mitigate the risk of something going wrong.
