Awards Criteria

Award category limits

  • A person can only be nominated in one of the individual award categories
  • An in-house team can only be nominated in one of the team award categories
  • A person or team may also be nominated for one or more special award categories
  • If nominations are received for a person or team outside these award category limits, the judges may disregard, re-categorise or merge the entries in their sole discretion.
  • ILANZ Executive Members (being the ILANZ President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary) cannot be nominated in any individual award categories (but their colleagues and teams can be nominated for any other individual or team award categories)

 

 

MC Public Sector In-house Lawyer Award

The 2023 MC Public Sector In-house Lawyer of the Year may be awarded to an in-house lawyer who has made a valuable contribution to their public sector organisation and the legal profession through:

  • Leadership and excellence in the provision of legal services aligned to the organisation’s strategic goals
  • Effective team management (where appropriate) or management of external advisers
  • Innovation, best practice and contribution to wider organisation
  • Contribution to or participation in initiatives that have benefited the legal team, organisation or wider public service

 

Private Sector In-house Lawyer Award

The 2023 ILANZ Private Sector In-house Lawyer of the Year (includes state owned enterprises and mixed ownership models) may be awarded to an in-house lawyer who has made a valuable contribution to their private sector organisation and the legal profession through:

  • Leadership and excellence in the provision of legal services aligned to the organisation’s strategic goals
  • Effective team management (where appropriate) or management of external advisers
  • Innovation, best practice and influence across the business
  • Contribution to or participation in initiatives that have benefited the legal team, organisation or wider industry

 

MAS New In-house Lawyer Award

The 2023 MAS New In-house Lawyer of the Year may be awarded to an in-house lawyer who has been employed in-house roles for less than 5 years as at 31 March 2023 and has demonstrated their potential as a leading member of the In-house legal profession in New Zealand through:

  • Excellence in the provision of legal services that have significantly contributed to their organisation’s performance
  • Evidence of continued learning ability and capacity to develop knowledge of areas of law beyond those previously practiced
  • Demonstrating leadership potential
  • Contribution to or participation in initiatives that have benefited the legal team and/or wider organisation

Nominees should have been practising for no more than 10 years since the date on which they were first admitted to practice as a lawyer.

 

Sole In-house Lawyer Award

The 2023 ILANZ Sole In-house Lawyer of the Year may be awarded to an in-house lawyer who operates an in-house legal function (either as a standalone function or as part of a specific business unit or function within the organisation) and has made a valuable contribution to their (public or private sector) organisation and the legal profession through:

  • Leadership and excellence in the provision of legal services aligned to the organisation’s strategic goals
  • Effective matter or risk management (where appropriate) or management of external legal (or other) advisers, and effective internal and external stakeholder relations (as a trusted adviser)
  • Able to show innovation in the delivery of advice and support services
  • Ability to perform their role in accordance with best practice
  • Level of contribution, trust and influence across the business
  • Contribution to or participation in initiatives that have benefited the legal function, wider organisation and/or legal profession (eg. CPD, delivering training, mentoring, etc.)

 

Chapman Tripp Private Sector In-house Team Award

The 2023 Chapman Tripp Private Sector In-house Team of the Year Award may be awarded to an In-house legal team that has made a valuable contribution to their organisation and the legal profession through:

  • Leadership and excellence in the provision of legal services aligned to the organisation’s strategic goals
  • Demonstrated effective teamwork and management of relationships (internal stakeholders and external advisors)
  • Innovation and best practice
  • Contribution to or participation in initiatives that have benefited the legal team and/or wider organisation

 

Public Sector In-house Team Award

The 2023 Public Sector In-house Team of the Year Award may be awarded to an In-house legal team that has made a valuable contribution to their organisation and the legal profession through:

  • Leadership and excellence in the provision of legal services aligned to the organisation’s strategic goals
  • Demonstrated effective teamwork and management of relationships (internal stakeholders and external advisors)
  • Innovation and best practice
  • Contribution to or participation in initiatives that have benefited the legal team and/or wider organisation

 

Tompkins Wake Small In-house Team Award

The 2023 Tompkins Wake Small In-house Team of the Year Award may be awarded to an In-house legal team with no more than 10 full-time equivalent lawyers that has made a valuable contribution to their organisation and the legal profession through:

  • Leadership and excellence in the provision of legal services aligned to the organisation’s strategic goals
  • Demonstrated effective teamwork and management of relationships (internal stakeholders and external advisors)
  • Innovation and best practice
  • Contribution to or participation in initiatives that have benefited the legal team and/or wider organisation

 

Artemis In-house Innovation Award

The 2023 Artemis In-house Innovation Award may be awarded to an in-house lawyer or in-house legal team that made a valuable contribution to their organisation and the legal profession through:

  • Demonstrating excellence in innovation in the delivery of in-house legal services
  • trying new ways to deliver legal services that are more effective or efficient
  • Creating a safe environment where staff are comfortable to experiment, make mistakes and learn together
  • Encouraging creativity, innovation, and thinking outside the box

Nominations in this category could relate to a specific project, problem or opportunity – or broader approach to innovation on topics such as culture, people, technology or process.

 

ComplyWith Community Contribution Award

The 2023 CompyWith Community Contribution Award may be awarded to an In-house lawyer or in-house legal team who has made an outstanding contribution to the profession or to the community beyond their “day job” or to an in-house team.  Many lawyers voluntarily support community activities, legal and otherwise, such as:

  • Assisting with Community Law Centres
  • Lobbying on behalf of interest groups
  • Helping not-for-profits with their legal work
  • Volunteering for charities
  • Supporting the arts
  • Involvement with cultural, sports and youth groups

$5,000 in funding will be awarded to a community organisation of the winners choice.
 

Simpson Grierson People and Culture Excellence Award

One of the signs of a healthy workplace culture is the ability to celebrate our failures and successes together. This award recognises an in-house legal team that fosters and prioritises best practice in team culture by creating a positive and supportive culture within their team and wider organisation through:

  • Maintaining a high-trust and collaborative culture
  • Contributing actively to developing and maintaining positive workplace culture within the team and wider organisation
  • Creating an inclusive environment, where people feel included, valued and empowered
  • Fostering a safe environment for ideas, feedback, and learning
  • Creating a team where kindness and empathy is the norm – and where team members feel welcomed supported and cared for
  • Providing excellent personal and professional development opportunities and programmes for team members

 

 

Eligibility

All lawyers employed or engaged by organisations in an in-house capacity and holding a current NZLS in-house practicing certificate are eligible for the 2023 Awards.

The 2023 award period runs from 1 March 2022 until the closing date for nominations. Activities started prior to 1 March 2022 can be included in nominations as long they continued into the award period. There are specific eligibility criteria for each awards category

Members of the judging panels and the ILANZ Executive Committee members are not eligible for consideration in the individual award categories.
