Solicitor / Senior Solicitor - Wellington
We are looking for Solicitors to join our busy in-house legal team. This is a varied and interesting role where you will provide high quality, practical advice for the EPA on a wide range of issues. On a day to day basis we collaborate with our scientists, our Maori policy advisers, senior management, central government departments, and the public. We tackle issues such as emissions trading, pesticide use, GMO’s, nationally significant infrastructure projects under the RMA, and marine consents for oil and gas and seabed mining activities out in the EEZ. We also provide advice on broader public law issues, including matters relating to the Crown Entities Act, compliance and litigation.
What we’re looking for
This is a 10 month fixed term role covering parental leave. Appointment as a solicitor or senior solicitor will be dependent on your skills and experience. We are looking for candidates that have at least 2-10 years’ experience in a similar role and if you have compliance experience that would be a distinct advantage.
You will provide timely, accurate and solution focussed legal advice on legal issues associated with the EPA’s statutory functions (including those under the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act, the Resource Management Act, the Climate Change Response Act and the Exclusive Economic Zone and Continental Shelf (Environmental Effects) Act) as well as advising on broader corporate service matters.
For the right candidate, we will consider part-time hours and/or a secondment from another agency.
Knowledge and experience required
We are looking for solicitors who:
- are qualified Barristers and Solicitors with a current Practicing Certificate
- have a proven background in producing quality legal services, preferably with experience in environmental or public law, or both
- have a sound understanding of public policy processes and the roles of government agencies
- is able to provide sound advice in an operational context
- works collaboratively to develop effective relationships at work
- have a background or understanding of the enforcement of regulatory frameworks
- ideally have previous experience in providing compliance advice.
