At Downer we are committed to building strong relationships of trust with our customers, truly understanding and predicting their needs and bringing them world leading insights and solutions, all delivered through great people.

Downer employs over 12,000 people in New Zealand and provides infrastructure solutions across a variety of sectors - transportation, telecommunications, facilities management, water, energy, infrastructure projects and vertical construction. And now that the Spotless NZ business operations are managed locally by Downer, we have a wider facilities management base, and significant work in catering, cleaning and related hospitality services.   Downer New Zealand is one of the country's largest service providers providing services to a wide variety of clients across public and private sectors.  It is also part of the Downer EDI group (listed on the ASX) with all the career opportunities that being part of a larger organization provides.

Two roles are now available in our in-house Legal team. One is to fill an existing vacancy and one is a newly established role which is required to deal with the expanding needs of Downer’s business.

In both of the roles you will work closely with the Chief Legal Counsel New Zealand and the other members of the established Legal Team. You will be required to work collaboratively in a team focused environment with a wide range of people to assist in providing commercially focused legal advice right across the Downer New Zealand business.  The legal team advises on a broad range of legal and commercial issues – including front end contractual work (client tender reviews, services and supply agreements and procurement arrangements), joint ventures & alliances, and also manages disputes, litigation and regulatory issues that impact the business.

The roles require candidates with good technical and interpersonal skills. We are looking for lawyers with sound commercial contract skills, a genuine interest in the business and a willingness to work alongside our business units to explore opportunities and develop commercial solutions and great outcomes for the business. We are looking for experience in commercial and company law, ideally with some expertise in front end and/or back end construction law having worked with civil construction and related contracts. Experience in managing civil litigation and construction law dispute resolution processes would also be very helpful.  Candidates who are able to handle multiple competing demands in a fast paced and constantly changing business environment and some experience in-house, including any secondment(s), would  will be at real advantage.

The roles are both full time and head office based (in Auckland), but you may be required to or able to work from different offices from time to time.We are seeking applications from legal professionals with at least 5-7 years PQE who are willing to learn and adapt to an in-house environment.

This is an exciting opportunity to become immersed in a broad based business group that contributes positively to New Zealand’s economy while working in a strong team environment to also develop your own skills and experience.
