Here at the Medical Council of New Zealand, our main purpose is to protect the health and safety of all New Zealanders. How do we do this? We ensure that all doctors have the skills and competency they need to practise medicine. We adhere to a strict registration and regulation process, meaning our doctors are proficient in the education, performance, standards, conduct, and health codes they need to best help their patients.
We are currently looking for an experienced senior lawyer to be our Senior Adviser in our in- house legal team. As our Senior Legal Adviser, you will utilise your skills to provide legal advice to professional conduct committees investigating concerns about the conduct of doctors. You will also work with prosecuting counsel to prepare cases for hearing at the Health Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal. You will be comfortable identifying issues and risks, and advising on how best to mitigate these risks. Reviewing and evaluating case management issues, you’ll confidently provide sound legal advice, as well as guiding and influencing decision-making.
Your ability to identify opportunities for the Medical Council to improve its delivery of regulatory functions, including recommendations for changes to policy, procedure, and training will also be greatly valued.
You’ll enjoy being part of a supportive and flexible work environment, one that offers interesting and rewarding work, and health insurance to all its employees. You will have the chance to work with an incredibly knowledgeable senior management team, and help guide and grow our talented Legal Adviser.
Your knowledge and previous experience in leadership, medical law and legislation within the health sector, in particular the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act 2003, will put you in good stead for this role. Ideally, you’ll successfully have around ten years PQE, and preferably in the health sector. We are also looking for a strong leader to support and mentor our legal adviser who directly will report to you.
