Senior Lawyer – Permanent, full time, Wellington
Seeking a policy and legislation focused Senior Lawyer to join a socially minded in-house legal team committed to empowering informed decision-making by a large social sector agency.

The Ministry of Social Development (MSD) is the lead agency for the social sector purposed to help New Zealanders help themselves to be safe, strong and independent. Our client is looking to bring a Senior Lawyer into MSD Legal Services. This role reports to the Public Law Team Manager and has close working relationships with the Chief Legal Advisor and other MSD Legal Services Managers, key MSD policy managers and advisors, and external stakeholders and agencies.
The successful applicant will contribute to the provision of high quality, pragmatic legal advice and advocacy services to all areas of MSD. This high-achieving team provides advice on a wide range of policy, legislative, and operational matters. This role has a strong focus on policy and legislative reform and will work closely with MSD’s policy teams, Crown Law, the Parliamentary Counsel Office, and other agencies. The successful candidate will apply a high level of intellectual rigour to their work and will have a proven track record in providing sound, pragmatic, fit for purpose, legal advice.
What you will need:
- Minimum of 5 years of experience
- Policy and legislative reform background
- Good understanding of the machinery of government
- Innovative, analytical, solution-focussed ,and collaborative approach
- Hold a current practising certificate
- Strong Relationship Management Skills
Critical to this appointment is a genuine desire to work in the public service, and experience advising on policy and legislative reform. You will also have strong critical thinking skills, excellent communication skills, and be a highly motivated and inspiring mentor for junior team members. You will enjoy a wide variety of work, where no two days will be the same, and you will be able you to contribute meaningfully to the improvement of the delivery of social services to New Zealanders.
