Roia, Tima Tiriti o Waitangi - Te Whanganui-a-Tara - Wellington
Crown Counsel, Treaty Team – Wellington (12 month fixed term role)
Crown Law provides legal advice and representation to the Government in matters that affect all New Zealanders, particularly in the areas of criminal, public and administrative law. At Crown Law you will work with leading public lawyers and find professional challenges that you won’t find anywhere else. It is rewarding and challenging work that will see you making your mark. We offer a flexible work environment and unique career development opportunities within the broader Government Legal Network.
We are currently looking to appoint Crown Counsel within our Treaty Group. This is a unique position to advise the Government and to act on its behalf in relation to the many complex contemporary and historical issues that arise from the interpretation and application of Treaty of Waitangi principles in the Crown-Maori relationship. Counsel in the Treaty teams regularly advise Executive Government and Ministries on the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi as part of policy development as well as representing the Crown in the Courts and the Waitangi Tribunal and on matters relating to the evolving status of the Treaty within domestic law.
The nature of this role requires sound legal experience in public law and/or litigation, and an interest in matters relating to the Treaty of Waitangi. Experience appearing before the Courts and the Waitangi Tribunal would be beneficial.
This position is based in Wellington.
