ILANZ, In-House Lawyers Association of New Zealand

Legal Counsel - Wellington

13-month fixed-term contract, maternity leave cover.

Do you love thinking outside the box and want to put your agile lawyering into practice?

New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE) has one simple purpose. We help New Zealand businesses grow internationally - bigger, better, faster - for the benefit of New Zealand. We thrive on providing our customers (NZ businesses) with world-class advice on how to expand internationally and helping them build the capability they need to succeed on the world stage.

As NZ's international business development agency with offices in 50 locations around the world, our work environment is dynamic, exciting and challenging.

In this role you will deal with a broad range of issues, such as reviewing commercial contracts, identifying and advising on Closer Economic Relations and World Trade Organisation issues, managing litigation and advising on legislative compliance issues. As part of our small Legal team you will be one of the "go to" people for all of NZTE's legal issues and it is highly likely that you will be called on to deal with issues in areas of law that you are not familiar with.

The role is probably best suited to a mid to senior level lawyer, but we will consider any applicant with more than two years' legal experience.

The following specialist experience would be helpful, but is not essential:

  • Experience working in a public sector legal team
  • Experience working in the commercial or public law teams in a private law firm
  • Experience as an in-house commercial lawyer in a private sector entity

This role will fit someone who enjoys supporting peers, building strong relationships across the business, providing pragmatic solutions and making judgement calls. A proactive, collaborative approach, and a 'can do' attitude will be key to success.
