Legal Counsel - Wellington

This is an exciting, broad and flexible role providing legal services and commercial support to Kordia’s NZ business. The Legal Counsel will report to Kordia Group’s Executive General Manager, Legal and Risk, but will operate semi-autonomously.  The role would suit an existing in-house counsel or an associate or senior associate with good commercial experience seeking to move in-house. As Kordia is a technology-based business and often at the forefront of new developments, an interest in technology and a passion for continuing to learn is highly desirable.


In New Zealand, Kordia provides business-critical services in the following areas:

  • telecommunications
  • IoT
  • cyber security and information security
  • maritime communications, including safety-of-life
  • installation and maintenance activities through its field services team; and
  • broadcasting, including free-to-air television and FM radio.  


Across all these areas, the Legal Counsel will be responsible for preparing and negotiating commercial contracts, advising on general legal issues, assisting with responses to RFPs and providing legal and commercial advice in relation to product development. There will also be a requirement to oversee relevant regulatory issues, attend industry body forums and to monitor compliance and policy.


In addition to having sound commercial judgement and the ability to liaise provide assistance to a large range of internal expert customers, excellent writing and contract drafting skills are required. Experience with telecommunications and technology matters would be an advantage.  Some exposure to property law would be helpful. Having the experience and confidence to work independently is essential.


The Legal Counsel is expected to work closely and constructively with Kordia’s Executive Team members as well as with the other business managers, leadership team and also with external legal counsel.


We are seeking a candidate with:

  • A law degree and a New Zealand practising certificate
  • 8+ years PQE
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to develop and maintain good working relationships
  • The ability to think laterally and develop sound innovative and practical solutions to diverse problems
