This is a newly created role to work with MHNZ’s Head of Legal.  The Legal Counsel will be primarily engaged with transactional work but will also handle a wide range of legal matters and work proactively with the business to manage legal and commercial risk.  In addition to drafting, reviewing and negotiating a wide range of contracts (from international distribution, consulting and supply agreements through to hive placement licences and IT/IP agreements), you will:

• advise on consumer law (privacy/data protection, fair trading, advertising and marketing), property law, employment law, dispute resolution and general legal compliance;
• provide support on corporate transactions, projects and operational issues;
• contribute to process and corporate policy improvements and help ensure appropriate governance;
• actively drive continuous improvement of all areas to insure best practice and ongoing improvement; and
• provide training to the business.

This role would suit either a mid or senior level commercial lawyer with the opportunity to work less than full time hours if desired. Flexible working arrangements are available.

About you

What we are looking for

• Qualified lawyer with NZ practising certificate (or eligibility to hold one).
• Mid to senior level experience gained in private practice or in-house.
• Broad commercial law experience, ideally with some corporate, privacy and international business expertise
• Experience in reviewing and negotiating contracts and the ability to advise on a variety of legal issues
• Initiative and a pragmatic, practical approach to problem solving.

The ideal candidate will be:

• highly organised and proficient in Microsoft Office suite;
• able to take initiative and manage work without supervision;
• able to juggle competing priorities and make decisions with confidence;
• able to write and explain legal issues simply to people without a legal background; and
• someone who enjoys getting involved, learning about the business; its products, customers and people, and building relationships at all levels.
