  • Are you solution focused, with initiative and sound judgement?

About Ministry of Social Development

MSD is the lead agency for the social sector.  We help the Government to set priorities across the sector, co-ordinate the actions of other social sector agencies and track changes in the social wellbeing of New Zealanders.

About the Team

MSD Legal provides professional legal advice and advocacy services to all areas of the Ministry.  This is an exciting opportunity to join our collaborative team of fun, friendly professionals focussed on providing high quality legal advice across the Ministry. You’ll be part of a dedicated and supportive team.

About the Role

The Litigation team within MSD Legal manages higher court litigation, working closely with Crown Law and internal Ministry clients. The team primarily deals with claims resolution for historic abuse claims, social security high court matters, and human rights complaints and litigation.

This Lawyer role is focussed on supporting the Ministry’s Historic Claims team. The Historic Claims team work with people who have been abused in State care, in particular the care of Child, Youth and Family and its predecessors, to address their concerns without them needing to resort to civil litigation. The role requires working alongside the team to support their claims process, manage litigation, advise on individual claims and processes and procedures.

This role does not generally include Court advocacy as Crown Law is instructed but familiarity with court processes and litigation management is desirable.

About you:

  • A minimum of 2 years of experience providing legal advice to clients
  • Able to build successful client and team relationships
  • Pragmatic and solutions focussed
  • Influencing skills
  • A current New Zealand practising certificate (or be eligible to hold one)
