Legal Counsel - Auckland
British American Tobacco is all about freedom of choice — whether it's our people or our products. Combined with our entrepreneurial spirit, it's what's driven our phenomenal success. We started trading tobacco over a hundred years ago. Today, we're a multibillion dollar company with more than 200 brands in our portfolio. With robust positions in each of our regional markets, our future looks equally bright too.
There's no doubt our industry is controversial — we're the first to admit that. But rest assured, we take a responsible approach to our trade. In each of our markets, we observe every local law regarding tobacco (in many cases going further through our own voluntary code). Not only that, we treat our farmers fairly, invest in the environment and help to sustain local communities.
British American Tobacco is a market leading, global organisation. Thanks to our people we have continued to exceed expectations in an increasingly complex and challenging marketplace.
BAT New Zealand is looking for a contractor to join its Legal and External Affairs team, which plays an integral part in advising and guiding our business. The role would be on a full-time basis for a 12-month term, starting in early 2018.
The position, based in Parnell, Auckland, would primarily share responsibility for the provision of general legal services and regulatory advice to our various operating companies in the South Pacific. Travel will therefore be an expected part of the role. When necessary, you may also be required to provide legal assistance to BAT's NZ business. Accordingly, you will be required to interpret the legal and regulatory environment in multiple markets.
You will have extensive and wide ranging corporate and commercial legal experience, strong negotiation and drafting skills and, ideally, experience advising clients in regulated industries. In addition, some trade practices experience is preferable. As both internal and external engagement will be a feature of the role, excellent inter-personal, communication and influencing skills are essential.
You will ideally have at least 7 years' experience in a well-regarded law firm or in house.
If you are looking for your next challenge in a global, dynamic, fast moving and complex environment, then this role is for you!
