CONFERENCE CONDENSED #4 THINKING BIG AND ACTING GREAT

CONFERENCE CONDENSED #4 THINKING BIG AND ACTING GREAT

By SIAN WINGATE CORPORATE LAWYER, POWERCO LTD & ILANZ COMMITTEE PRESIDENT| 7 August 2018

At ILANZ conferences we always aim to offer our delegates some inspiration from New Zealanders who have achieved distinction in their chosen field and who are willing to share their learning along the way.

Inspiration isn't hard to find. We are surrounded by people who started with very little and yet have accomplished a lot!

This year we heard from Annah Stretton and Gilbert Enoka. They each had their own great stories to share.

Annah walked us through her personal account of how she has found her true passion. It has not been from her entrepreneurial achievements in retail and fashion. It is her foundation's initiative RAW (Reclaim Another Woman) that has given her a genuine, deep satisfaction.

She told us how her years of acquired business acumen and experience has been channeled into the RAW project.

What she taught us in-house lawyers is that we all have a wide range of skills from our 'day jobs'.

These can be used for any number of purposes, including volunteering, setting up a new charity or lending your skills to your school board. We're not just one thing, no one is. We are the sum of our lifelong learning.

Gilbert Enoka helped NZ to win back-to-back Rugby World Cups. He wasn't asked by ILANZ to prepare us to play International Rugby (thank goodness), but he did offer some really practical strategies to be 'great' at our day to day jobs.

He shared simple but effective techniques:

If your brain gets stuck, look at an object and say its name out loud. That calms the brain he tells us. The brain likes a simple truth. (Yes, you might get a sideways glance when you start saying 'stapler' out loud but if it clears your mind to get on with some good thinking, who cares!)

Remember to breathe. Proper, real deep breaths to get some oxygen flowing.

Look at your feet to ground your mind (you'll now notice so many ABs doing just that on the field!).

My takeaway was that being 'great' and 'thinking big' are not just the headline achievements, they are things we can do every day.   As in-house lawyers we have the opportunity and capacity to do this all the time. Whether it is offering solutions to colleagues, thinking how we can deliver the best legal services with less, volunteering our time out of work or being the best coach, we can be for our kids' sports team, let’s be proud of what we achieve

Have a great week.

Nga mihi, Sian
